Yamdrok’s branching shore

Yamdrok’s Tibetan name means “jade lake.” At about 4,441 metres, its winding shoreline forms a branching shape compared to coral. Sunlight produces varied shades of blue across the water. The lake supports highland naked carp, while grassy islands provide habitat for waterbirds. Black-necked cranes and Tibetan gazelles are among the animals of the wider lake area.

A winter pastoral crossing

At Puma Yumco, Tuiwa herders traditionally move sheep across the ice to islands with winter grass. The animals follow a path marked with stove ash, which helps reduce slipping. The move gives the flock access to pasture beyond the shore; photographs of the blue ice and long line of sheep have made this working tradition a distinctive local scene.
