From rolling hills to river gorges
The land generally descends from northwest to southeast. Much of the central county is an open, gently sloping, hilly plateau. Around Yongxing (永兴) and Zhonghe (中和), however, the Wanma River (万马河) and Jinsha River cut deep valleys with a pronounced V shape. The county’s monsoon climate brings a dry winter and spring, with most rain concentrated between July and September.
Festivals and rural places
The Zhiju Yi Costume Festival (直苴彝族赛装节), Dai Water-Splashing Festival (傣族泼水节), Yi Torch Festival (彝族火把节) and Yi New Year (彝族年) are among its local celebrations. Rural visitor destinations include Zhonghe Old Street (中和老街), Zhugeying Village (诸葛营村) and Weidi’s Shili Cherry Valley (维的十里樱桃谷). The county name combines the first characters of the historic market towns Yongding (永定) and Renhe (仁和).
