Qiaojia County (巧家县), in southwestern Zhaotong (昭通), rises from the Jinsha River (金沙江) landscape to Jiaodingshan (轿顶山), the 4,041.6-metre main peak of Yao Mountain (药山).

Wetlands, grass slopes and birds

Mashu Wetland (马树湿地) and the rhododendrons of Dabailu (大白路) are among the county’s natural sights. Laishi Mountain (赖石山) in Chongxi Town (崇溪镇) has extensive grassy slopes, while Jintang (金塘) provides habitat for bee-eaters (栗喉蜂虎). The county’s principal rivers include the Jinsha, Niulan (牛栏江) and Yili (以礼河).

A copper route and local products

The Shijiangfang Copper Transport Road (石匠房铜运古道) at Menggu (蒙姑) recalls the transport of copper. Local crafts include Mashu red felt and mottled-copper objects. Local produce includes small-bowl brown sugar (小碗红糖), green Sichuan pepper, walnuts, mangoes, blueberries and loquats. Distinctive foods include Hongshan ash tofu (红山灰豆腐) and Dazhai canna-starch noodles (大寨芭蕉芋粉条).
