Wuzhen’s waterways and writers
Wuzhen lies in northern Tongxiang. Its eastern and western town rivers form an interconnected water system around the settlement. The town is associated with novelist Mao Dun (茅盾) and artist Mu Xin (木心); Mao Dun’s Former Residence (茅盾故居) and the Tanjiwan Site (谭家湾遗址) are nationally protected monuments. Wuzhen also hosts a theatre festival.
Puyuan’s textile past
Puyuan developed as a settlement in the Southern Song dynasty and expanded during the Ming and Qing periods. Changshui (长水) lies to the south and the Grand Canal (京杭大运河) to the north, framing its traditional Jiangnan (江南) architecture. A history of silk production and the present knitwear industry underpin the town’s fashion-oriented cultural identity.
