Setting and landscape
The west of the district lies where the Tiantai (天台山脉) and Siming (四明山脉) ranges meet; its highest point is Huangnijiang Gang (黄泥浆岗) at 976 metres. The northeast is flat, crossed by waterways, and forms part of the Ningbo–Fenghua plain (宁奉平原). The coastline runs for 61 kilometres and takes in 24 islands. Rice and taro come from the plain, while the hills produce bamboo, tea, waxberries and honey peaches.
History
In 222 BC the Qin set up Yin County (鄞县) with its seat at Baidu (白杜), in present-day Fenghua. Fenghua became a county of its own in 738 under the Tang, was raised to a zhou (prefecture) in 1295 under the Yuan and returned to county status in 1369. It became a county-level city in 1988 and a district of Ningbo in October 2016.
What to see
The Xikou–Tengtou tourist area (溪口滕头旅游景区) is rated 5A. It joins Xikou with Tengtou Village (滕头村), which the United Nations has named an eco-village. The Chiang family residence (蒋氏故居) is a national key protected site. Xuedou Mountain (雪窦山) beside Xikou is a national key scenic area and has several buildings and sights linked to the Chiang family. In Xikou itself, the old Sanli Long Street (三里长街) reaches the bank of the Shanxi River (剡溪); People's Daily's Zhejiang edition reports holiday visitors there heading on to Xuedou Temple (雪窦寺) and the Maitreya Altar (弥勒圣坛).
Food and local traditions
Four local products carry Chinese geographical-indication status: Fenghua taro (奉化芋艿头), Fenghua honey peaches (奉化水蜜桃), Fenghua Quhao tea (奉化曲毫茶) and the Xikou thousand-layer cake (溪口千层饼). People's Daily's Zhejiang edition describes the taro, in season around the October holidays, as floury and soft.
The Fenghua cloth dragon (奉化布龙) dance, over 800 years old, entered the first national intangible-heritage list in 2006. It has more than forty traditional routines, and some of its moves have been adopted as set moves in national dragon-dance competitions.
