Setting and landscape

The district covers 3,218 square kilometres and holds 127 kilometres of the Yangtze, which winds through the city itself; the riverside road along the Yangtze here is promoted as the "first road on the Yangtze". Jiangjin borders Bishan (璧山区), Jiulongpo (九龙坡区) and Dadukou (大渡口区) to the north, Banan (巴南区) and Qijiang (綦江区) to the east, Xishui County (习水县) in Guizhou to the south, and Yongchuan (永川区) and Hejiang County (合江县) in Sichuan to the west. The district government states that 90.2 percent of its soil is rich in selenium.

History

A county has been seated here since 221, more than 1,800 years. It became a county-level city in 1992 and a district in 2006. Jiangjin was the home town of Marshal Nie Rongzhen (聂荣臻) and the place where Chen Duxiu (陈独秀) lived out his last years, and it was the first place in Chongqing named a municipal historic and cultural city.

What to see

Simian Mountain (四面山), in the south of the district, became a national 5A scenic area in 2015. It covers 213 square kilometres, including the Wangxiangtai (望乡台), Tudiyan (土地岩), Longtan Lake (龙潭湖), Honghai (洪海) and Pearl Lake (珍珠湖) areas, with a Danxia landform, urn-shaped enclosed valleys and a group of high-mountain waterfalls; the Chongqing government calls Wangxiangtai Falls the highest in China. The Tudi Shenyan (土地神岩) cliff is 376 metres long and 127 metres high. The area also holds the "Ladder of Love" (爱情天梯), the Huiqianyan cliff paintings (灰千岩摩崖壁画), dated to more than 5,000 years ago, and the Huilong manor (会龙庄).

Five of Jiangjin's towns are national historic and cultural towns: Baisha (白沙), Zhongshan (中山), Tanghe (塘河), Wutan (吴滩) and Shima (石蟆). The Baisha film base has served as the main location for more than 100 films and television dramas.

Food and local products

Jiangjin is known as the home of Sichuan pepper (花椒). The Chongqing government dates pepper growing here to the Yuan dynasty, more than 600 years ago; fresh Jiangjin peppercorns are about 80 percent ripe, bright green or yellow-green. The district also lists citrus, peanuts, puffed-rice candy (米花糖) and Jiangjin jade (江津玉) among its well-known products.
