Dong villages and music
The county has 98 villages on the national list of traditional villages. Zhaoxing (肇兴侗寨) is known as the "first village of the Dong", and Tang'an (堂安侗寨) holds a Dong ecomuseum that keeps its culture and old buildings intact. Huanggang (黄岗侗寨) was chosen by the UN World Tourism Organization as a Best Tourism Village.
The Dong grand song (侗族大歌), polyphonic choral singing without conductor or accompaniment, was placed on the first national intangible heritage list in 2006 for Liping. It belongs to the villages of southern Liping, including Yandong (岩洞), Koujiang (口江), Shuangjiang (双江), Yongcong (永从), Zhaoxing, Shuikou (水口) and Longe (龙额), and neighbouring northern Congjiang (从江). Choirs sing it when one village or clan visits another; the Song poet Lu You (陆游) already recorded Dong people visiting and singing together. Local festivals include the Dong New Year (侗年).
History
The name Liping dates from 1283 under the Yuan. In the Qing, Kaitai County (开泰县) here was the seat of Liping Prefecture (黎平府), and Liping County was set up in 1913. In December 1934 the Central Red Army on the Long March reached Liping, its first town in Guizhou, and on 18 December the Politburo met on Qiaojie (翘街) and adopted Mao Zedong's proposal on strategy; Xinhua describes the meeting as laying the ground for the Zunyi Meeting.
The meeting site at 52 Erlangpo (二郎坡) in Defeng (德凤), once the Hu Rongshun (胡荣顺) shop built in the Qing Jiaqing reign with three courtyards and nine light-wells, became a national key protected site in 2006 together with Mao Zedong's former residence at 3 Erlangpo. Qiaojie is listed as a famous historic and cultural street of China.
Food and local products
Xinhua names Liping rice noodles (黎平米粉) and Dong sour soup (侗族酸汤) as local dishes. Liping fuling fungus (黎平茯苓) and Xianghe glutinous rice (香禾糯) carry national geographical-indication status, and Liping is known as a home of Chinese fir (杉木). Indigo dyeing, silverwork, embroidery and lusheng pipes are among its living crafts.
