Muye District 牧野区

Muye District (牧野区) is one of the four main urban districts of Xinxiang (新乡), Henan, covering the north-central part of the city. It takes its name from the Battle of Muye (牧野之战), the victory by which the Zhou overthrew the Shang, which the Xinxiang government places here.

History

Under the Shang the area lay within the royal domain. Three villages, Yanggang (杨岗村), Rugang (茹岗村) and Changgang (畅岗村), were once called the Old Dragon, Old Phoenix and Old Tortoise ridges, and are said to be where King Wu of Zhou (周武王) camped before the battle. The district itself was created in 1955.

When Xinxiang was the capital of Pingyuan Province (平原省) in the early years of the People's Republic, the provincial seat was in what is now Muye. The Former Site of the Pingyuan Provincial Party Committee (中共平原省委旧址), in use from 1949 to 1952, and the Former Site of Pingyuan Normal College (平原师范学院旧址), dating from 1951 and located in Rongxiao Road subdistrict (荣校路街道), are both on the Henan provincial heritage list.

What to see

The Xinxiang government lists the former home of Qu Boyu (蘧伯玉), a worthy of the Spring and Autumn state of Wei (卫国), among the district's surviving remains, together with Yangshao and Longshan culture sites, Xingguo Temple (兴国寺) and the Mafang site (马坊遗址), which are protected at provincial or city level.

Getting oriented

Xinxiang's high-speed railway station is in Muye District. The Beijing–Guangzhou railway, the Xinxiang–Heze and Xinxiang–Yueshan railways, the Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed line and National Highway 107 all cross the district, as do four expressways. Battery making started early here: the Xinxiang government names state Factory 755, built here, as China's first maker of rechargeable batteries. The China Research Institute of Radiowave Propagation and the Farmland Irrigation Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences are also based here.
