Setting and landscape
The county is part of the Huang–Huai Plain (黄淮平原). Silt from the Yellow River and the Jialu River (贾鲁河) built up the north and centre, while the south, shaped by outlying spurs of the Funiu Mountains (伏牛山), rises in low ridges. The whole county lies between 73 and 154 metres above sea level. Besides the Yellow River and the Jialu, the Qili (七里河) and Yunliang (运粮河) rivers cross it.
History
Neolithic remains of the Peiligang culture (裴李岗文化) have been found at the Yewang site (业王遗址). In 964 BC, under King Mu of Zhou (周穆王), the Putian (圃田) area was set aside as a hunting park for the king and nobles, and Putian was later one of the county's old names. Zhongmu County was founded in the early Western Han. In AD 200 Cao Cao (曹操) defeated the larger army of Yuan Shao (袁绍) at Guandu. The Tang restored the name Zhongmu in 618, and in July 1983 the county was placed under Zhengzhou.
What to see
The Twin Pagodas of Shousheng Temple (寿圣寺双塔) in Ranjia village, Huangdian (黄店镇), were built in the Northern Song and listed as a national key protected site in 2013.
In May 2013 the Zhengzhou International Cultural and Creative Industry Park (郑州国际文化创意产业园) was set up in the county to develop culture and tourism, and it now runs Fantawild Zhengzhou (郑州方特旅游度假区), the Jianye Huayi Brothers Movie Town (建业·华谊兄弟电影小镇) and the Zhengzhou Garden Expo Park (郑州绿博园). The Zhongmu county government's 2026 summer report lists among the county's attractions Only Henan: Drama Fantasy City (只有河南·戏剧幻城), with 21 theatres and a 'Night Fantasy City' evening programme, a new pink Ferris wheel at Fantawild, summer-night iron-flower shows at the Movie Town, and Zhengzhou Haichang Ocean Park (郑州海昌海洋公园).
Food and local products
Zhongmu's economy was traditionally agricultural, and the county is called Zhengzhou's orchard and vegetable field. Garlic and watermelon are its signature produce, and Zhongmu watermelons are known throughout China.
Getting oriented
The Zhengzhou–Kaifeng intercity railway has two stations in the county, Jialuhe (贾鲁河站) and Lüboyuan (绿博园站). Zhengzhou East Station (郑州东站) lies about 20 kilometres west of the county town, and the Lianyungang–Khorgas Expressway crosses the whole county.
