History
Pengzhou prefecture was created in 686, under Empress Wu Zetian (武则天), from four counties of Yizhou (益州), and took its name from Tianpeng Gate (天彭阙). It was reduced to Peng County (彭县) in 1377 and became the county-level city of Pengzhou in 1993. In the Wenchuan earthquake of 12 May 2008, mountain roads were cut and the Xiaoyudong Bridge (小鱼洞大桥) collapsed, trapping about 100,000 residents in the hills.
What to see
The Annunciation Seminary (领报修院), usually called Bailu Shang Shuyuan (白鹿上书院), stands in Bailu town. A French missionary bishop began building it in 1895 as a seminary, and it was completed in 1908. A mudslide damaged it in 1934 and it fell out of use. The building collapsed largely in the 2008 earthquake and has since been restored to its original form; it has been a national protected site since 2006.
Three Song-dynasty pagodas, the White Pagoda of Zhenguo Temple (镇国寺白塔), the Yunju Monastery Pagoda (云居院塔) and the Zhengjue Temple Pagoda (正觉寺塔), are listed together as a national protected site. Longxing Temple (龙兴寺) in the city's Tianpeng (天彭) subdistrict keeps a Qing sutra library and a Republican-era relic pagoda, both on the Chengdu protected list. Yangpingguan (阳平观) is counted as the first of the Twenty-Four Parishes founded by Zhang Daoling (张道陵), and Mount Gexian (葛仙山) was the fifth. Natural areas include the geopark, the Baishui River National Forest Park (白水河国家森林公园), Yinchang Gorge (银厂沟) and Danjing Mountain (丹景山), whose carved stones and pagoda forest are also protected.
Food and local products
Pengzhou is one of China's five major commercial vegetable bases, and Pengzhou garlic is a registered geographical-indication product; its spinach was exported to Japan in large quantities in the 1990s. Aoping (敖平) is known for the medicinal herb chuanxiong (川芎). Peonies brought from Luoyang in the past grow in large numbers on Danjing Mountain. The Tang tea scholar Lu Yu (陆羽) ranked Pengzhou's tea first among those of Jiannan (剑南).
