What to see

The Feixiange cliff carvings (飞仙阁摩崖造像) in Xiange village (仙阁村), Chaoyanghu (朝阳湖) town, are part of the Pujiang Grottoes (蒲江石窟), a national protected site since 2006. The oldest figures date from 689, under Empress Wu Zetian (武则天). The site holds 64 Tang niches with 491 figures, 17 Five Dynasties niches with 256 figures and 11 Qing niches, and mixes Buddhist and Taoist images, including Laozi (太上老君), sometimes in the same niche. The largest figure is a seated Tang Maitreya about six metres high in niche 8 at Dafoping (大佛坪); niche 9 holds the Three Sages of the West, carved under the Wu Zhou.

Also in Chaoyanghu town is the Chenyaoyan section of the Tea Horse Road (衬腰岩茶马古道), another national protected site, dated from the Tang to the Republican era. Provincial listings include the Song-dynasty tomb of Wei Liaoweng (魏了翁墓), the Ming main hall of Hesha Temple (河沙寺) in Shou'an (寿安), the Tang–Song Baiyun salt well site (白云盐井遗址), the Qing Pujiang Confucian Temple (蒲江文庙) and Taiqing Temple (太清观). The Qing-era Mingyue kiln (明月窑) in Mingyue village, Ganxi (甘溪) town, is on the Chengdu city list.

Food and local products

Four Pujiang products are registered Chinese geographical indications: kiwifruit, chougan citrus (丑柑), Queshe (雀舌) tea, and rice-puff candy (蒲江米花糖), whose puffed rice is fried in a mix of lard and rapeseed oil, giving it a glossy white colour.

Getting oriented

The county seat is in Heshan (鹤山) subdistrict, about 50 kilometres from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. The Chengdu–Ya'an Expressway (成雅高速) and National Highways 318 and 108 run through the county.
