Setting and landscape
The county sits on the south-eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau between the Jinsha (金沙江) and Yalong (雅砻江) rivers, and its waters drain to both. The Shaluli Mountains (沙鲁里山) run through it from north to south, and the land is mostly rolling plateau, higher in the west than in the east. The county town lies on open grassland ringed by snow peaks.
Mount Genie (格聂山), the highest peak of the Shaluli range, was measured at 6,174.5 metres in figures published by the Ministry of Natural Resources in 2023; a Japanese team first reached its summit in 1987. The county government lists it among Litang's leading tourism resources, together with the Maoya grassland (毛垭大草原), where a China News Service photographer recorded the Wuliang River (无量河) winding across the pasture and National Highway 318 running through it.
History and culture
The county government describes Litang as a trading town on the Tea Horse Road (茶马古道) and one of China's 120 purely pastoral counties. The former name was Lihua County (理化县), when it belonged to Xikang Province (西康省).
Litang Monastery (理塘寺), also known as Changqing Chunke'er Monastery (长青春科尔寺), is described by Chinese Wikipedia as the largest Gelug monastery in Kham. Building began in 1581, in the time of the Third Dalai Lama. The monastery was bombed and destroyed in March 1956 and rebuilt from 1982; it was added to the provincial heritage list in 2004 and listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit on 5 March 2013. Chinese Wikipedia also calls it the only Gelug monastery in Kham able to award the geshe degree.
Getting oriented
Litang lies at a crossroads between Sichuan, Yunnan, Tibet and Qinghai, and National Highways G318 and G227 cross the county. Its neighbours are Yajiang (雅江县) to the east, Batang (巴塘县) to the west, Baiyu (白玉县) and Xinlong (新龙县) to the north, and Muli (木里县), Daocheng (稻城县) and Xiangcheng (乡城县) to the south.
