A former ferry settlement
Originally called Zhoukou (舟口), the town developed around an old ferry crossing. It took its later name in commemoration of the Northern Song thinker Zhou Dunyi (周敦颐), who taught here. Ming and Qing streets survive, together with historic structures and sites including Lianxi Shrine (濂溪祠), Wanshou Palace (万寿宫) and Caishen Tower (财神楼).
Longjiao Mountain
Longjiao Mountain (龙角山) adjoins the ancient town. Its Painter Sage Square (画圣广场) has a red-sandstone sculpture of the head of Tang painter Wu Daozi (吴道子), 30 metres wide and 15 metres high. Facing the sculpture is Huajiang Tower (画江楼); both commemorate Wu Daozi and his association with painting the Jialing River (嘉陵江).
