Railway and river crossings
The Neiwan railway branch connects the area with Zhudong (竹東). Around Neiwan, the river is about 100 metres wide, with a broad bed visible from the road above. Five suspension bridges span the riverbed; Neiwan Suspension Bridge (內灣吊橋) is one of the old settlement’s principal sights. Hexing Station (合興火車站), another stop in Hengshan, stands on Zhongshan Street (中山街).
Comics along the old street
Guangji Temple (廣濟宮), the railway station and theatre are landmarks of Neiwan Old Street (內灣老街). Cartoonist Liu Xingqin’s (劉興欽) characters Brother A-san (阿三哥) and Big Auntie (大嬸婆) have become local visual symbols. Street illustrations accompany specialities such as wild-ginger-flower rice dumplings.
