A hall of moral instruction

Daquantang was founded in 1892 by local figures Zhong Fengyuan (鍾逢源), Yang Fulai (楊福來) and Liu Renchao (劉仁超). It honours Guan Sheng Dijun (關聖帝君), and its name expresses the idea of moral instruction on Heaven’s behalf. The hall contributed to the movement against opium use and became an ancestral institution for Hakka (客家) spirit-writing halls involved in that work during Japanese rule.

Deities and local stories

Fuchang Temple worships the Three Mountain Kings (三山國王), deities brought from settlers’ home region. Songzi Bogong Temple in Wangyekeng (王爺坑) is associated with a story of successful prayers for a child. Its Bogong (伯公) figure holds a gold ingot, while Bogong’s consort (伯婆) cradles an infant.
