Family houses in a trading town

Hakka (客家) settlers from Guangdong (廣東) arrived during the Qing Yongzheng (雍正) reign. Commercial prosperity in the mid-nineteenth century encouraged wealthy local families to build substantial courtyard residences. The museum presents both their architectural character and the families’ histories, extending through the living town rather than occupying a single building.

A network of halls and lanes

Heping Street (和平街) includes the Zhang, Liu and Zhu family temples (張氏家廟、劉氏家廟、朱氏家廟) and Pan House (新埔潘屋). Chenggong Street (成功街) has the Lin and Fan family temples (林氏家廟、范氏家廟), while Zhongzheng Road (中正路) contains the Chen Ancestral Hall (陳氏宗祠). Outlying sites include Liu’s Shuangtang House (劉氏雙堂屋) and Wu Zhuoliu’s former home (吳濁流故居).
