Zhubei City 竹北市

Zhubei City (竹北市) in Hsinchu County (新竹縣) contains Xinwawu (新瓦屋), a Hakka (客家) settlement centred on Zhongxiao Hall (忠孝堂). Its name, meaning “new tiled houses,” reflects its later foundation than the nearby Lin-family shrine at Liuzhangli (六張犁).

A settlement preserved through change

The Lin (林) family’s settlement grew from migrants from Raoping (饒平) in Guangdong (廣東), and Zhongxiao Hall was established during the Qing Jiaqing (嘉慶) reign. Residents formed a flower-drum troupe in 1947. When high-speed-rail planning threatened the settlement, local residents and heritage advocates worked to preserve it.

Courtyards, canals and mixed materials

The 1.6-hectare cultural area uses the Xihe Shidi gatehouse (西河世第門樓) as its main entrance. Walls remain around the open courtyard and in some lanes. A rice-field education area lies to the north, with the Shiwulang irrigation channel (十五朗圳) along the northern and western sides. Buildings combine mud brick, red brick, concrete, timber and glass, reflecting successive construction and reuse.
