The old street
Nanzhuang Old Street (南庄老街) has small shops selling local snacks and Hakka food. Its older landmarks include a communal laundry place called Xishankeng (洗衫坑) and a post office from the Japanese period. Osmanthus Alley (桂花巷) runs between two of the settlement’s three principal streets. Only about two metres wide, it has red brick walls; its name came from a workshop established by women and community development workers to promote local culture.
Local products
The township produces fruit, vegetables, flowers and shiitake mushrooms, as well as farmed trout. The old street also has a traditional shop selling kimono, alongside the food stalls and reminders of everyday village life.
