A ridge path

Laochonggui Trail (老銃櫃步道) lies in Beipu Village (北埔村). About 1.5 kilometres long, it follows a ridge through camphor trees, acacias and bamboo, with relatively modest changes in gradient and plenty of shade. Tung blossoms add a seasonal feature to the woodland.

From weapons store to farm route

The trail’s name recalls a weapons and ammunition store used by Han settlers to defend their homes while opening up the surrounding mountains. The ridge route later carried agricultural goods between local communities. As modern roads took over, it fell out of use and became overgrown before restoration returned it to use as a walking trail.
