Timber and carving

The temple uses traditional southern Fujian architectural forms. Wood and stone carvings depict fish, birds, other animals, people and flowers. Above the main hall, carved beams and the coffered ceiling carry gold leaf. Large columns in the hall, beams in the worship pavilion and timber for the offering tables use Taiwanese cypress. The main hall’s principal beam spans about fifteen metres, with timber members joined by interlocking joints.

The temple garden

Cherry blossom and azaleas flower in spring around the temple. Japanese-style stone lanterns and guardian dogs stand in the garden, adding another set of details to examine beyond the main hall’s gilded decoration.
