Courtyards and rooflines

The residence has three principal ranges with inner and outer wings. Each set of wings forms its own courtyard. A low wall and gatehouse divide the forecourt into inner and outer spaces, with a lotus pond beyond. The house uses no wooden columns; its relatively restrained decoration leaves the layered, curved roof ridges especially noticeable.

Storage and protection

Half-storey spaces in the main ranges served both storage and refuge during floods. Trees surround the central buildings, part of the residence’s defensive character. On clear days, the lotus pond reflects the summit of Guanyin Mountain (觀音山). The residence was designated a national historic monument in 2018.
