Old streets and a hillside shrine
Pingxi Old Street (平溪老街), formerly Shidi Settlement (石底聚落), grew as mining attracted workers. Long, narrow shop houses, grocery shops and food stalls remain part of its streetscape, with trains passing overhead. Higher on the hillside, Guanyinyan (觀音巖) was cut into the rock in 1949 as a place for residents to pray for safe mining.
The workings at Jingtong
Above Jingtong Station (菁桐車站), the Shidi Inclined Shaft (石底大斜坑) was associated with offices, a materials warehouse, miners’ toilets and winding equipment. At the coal-washing and sorting site, women separated coal by size and density before it passed through discharge hoppers into railway wagons below.
