What to see

Jialan's decoration includes snake motifs, pottery, woodcarving and painting. Ceramic-bead activities use patterns associated with traditional stories and hopes. Roselle is a local food. Several traditionally built stone-slab houses have patterned beams and columns, with stoves outside assembled from slabs of the same material.

A family stone house

The Chen family's house has a documented rebuilding history. Chen Liujiu (陳六九) moved from Old Haocha (舊好茶) to Jialan in 1964. After the family's earlier stone house was demolished in 1982, Chen Sanxiang (陳叄祥) decided to rebuild it in 1993. Community members helped, with stone collected from New Haocha (新好茶); the rebuilt house was completed in 1996.
