A village shaped by relocation

Planning for Yongkang as a collective relocation settlement began in 1940, bringing together eleven Bunun families from several communities. A typhoon flood in 1968 damaged all 35 village houses. Three years later, residents moved to a site 500 metres south of the police station. The area north of the station became known as the old village; some families subsequently built homes there again.

Hunting and the harvest

The Ear-shooting Festival (射耳祭) includes prayers for successful hunting and crops. In the preparations described by National Taitung University (國立臺東大學), men hunt in the mountains and women make wine. Male family members take part in the ear-shooting rite, followed by a fire ritual at the ceremonial fire ground.
