Six generations of border architecture

The port became an official trading crossing between China and Russia in 1881. Its first modern gate, built in the 1960s, was a row of red-brick single-storey buildings. A fourth-generation gate was completed in 1996, followed by expansion into the fifth generation after 2000. The sixth-generation gate entered service in 2018. Khorgos itself formally became a city on 26 September 2014.

Goods and restaurants at the cooperation centre

The China–Kazakhstan Khorgos International Border Cooperation Centre (中哈霍尔果斯国际边境合作中心) brings together shops and trading businesses. The National Immigration Administration (国家移民管理局) describes goods such as Persian carpets, Russian honey and Kazakh enamel pots. Restaurants serve dumplings, Sichuan and Hunan dishes, and noodles from Shaanxi (陕西) and Shanxi (山西).
