History
The county government credits Huize with the white copper (baitong) exported along the Silk Road in the Three Kingdoms and Jin periods. Under the Ming, Dongchuan prefecture (东川府) cast the square-holed Jiajing Tongbao (嘉靖通宝) to mark the lighting of a furnace; the county government describes it as the world's largest, heaviest and thickest old coin. Under the Qing, 6.3314 million jin of copper a year was set for shipment to Beijing, 64 percent of the national total.
What to see
Huize Old Town (会泽古城), a 3A scenic area, keeps 36 of the 108 guild halls, temples and ancestral halls that merchant associations from other provinces built here in the Ming and Qing; the county government calls it the county town with the most guild halls in China. Its flagstone streets carry deep hoof prints that recall the copper caravans.
Dahai Grass Mountain (大海草山), a 4A scenic area 42 km south-west of the county town in Dahai township (大海乡), is high grassland at 3,500–4,017 m on the Wumeng Mountains (乌蒙山), grazed by sheep, with an outdoor ski field. The Yulu earth crack (雨碌大地缝), a 4A scenic area 61 km south-east in Yulu township (雨碌乡), is a slot gorge formed by the rise and fall of the earth's crust. Inside a crack more than 10 km long, light enters only as a strip from several hundred metres above, with karst caves and waterfalls along the way. The county government lists it as China's longest and narrowest. Baiwu village (白雾村) in Nagu town (娜姑镇), 19 km north-west, was a post station on the copper route and has more than 2,000 traditional houses and 24 Ming and Qing sites including guild halls, temples, old bridges and caravan inns; it became a national historic and cultural village in 2005.
Food and local products
Huize mottled copper (会泽斑铜) craft, with more than 300 years of history, was put on the national intangible heritage list in 2008. Local produce named by the county government includes Yanshui pomegranates (盐水石榴), Daibu strawberries (待补草莓), Shuicheng baozhu pears (水城宝珠梨) and Leye chillies (乐业辣椒); banquets include the pork "old eight bowls" (猪肉老八碗), and snacks include buckwheat cakes, xidoufen pea porridge (稀豆粉) and Baiwu jelly (白雾凉粉).
