From Kaihua to a city
The area’s administrative history reaches back to the Western Han period, when counties and commanderies were established in 111 BCE. Kaihua Prefecture (开化府) followed in 1667, and Wenshan County (文山县) in 1730. The county became a county-level city in December 2010.
A plateau centre and its crops
The Tropic of Cancer crosses the municipality, which has a subtropical plateau monsoon climate with relatively mild winters and summers. Wenshan adjoins Yanshan (砚山) to the northeast, Maguan (马关) to the south and Xichou (西畴) to the southeast. The city’s agriculture includes sanqi, star anise and sugarcane; sanqi cultivation and processing form a particular part of its local identity.
