The lake and regional position
The city is 52 kilometres from central Kunming (昆明) and 87 kilometres from central Yuxi (玉溪). Fuxian is a deep freshwater lake in the upper Pearl River (珠江) region, with ecological protection central to the city’s planning. Chengjiang’s historical resources also include Xiaoguanzhuang bronze finds (小关庄青铜文物) and the Jinlianshan tomb group (金连山古墓群).
Fossils and the natural museum
Chengjiang Fossil Site (澄江化石地) is a World Natural Heritage property documenting the Cambrian explosion. Chengjiang Fossil Site Natural Museum (澄江化石地自然博物馆) opened on 10 August 2020. Its displays follow major stages in the evolution of life and biodiversity, combining fossil and modern-animal specimens with interactive technology to illustrate ancient marine life.

Fuxian Lake is a deep plateau lake in central Yunnan, about 60 kilometres east of Kunming, shared between Chengjiang, Jiangchuan district and Huaning county; this entry covers its Chengjiang side. It fills a fault-subsidence basin, and the Chengjiang government counts its water as a strategic reserve holding 91.4 per cent of the Class I fresh water in China's nationally monitored natural freshwater lakes.

The Chengjiang Fossil Site World Natural Heritage Museum, which also carries the name Yunnan Natural Museum, stands in Chengjiang, Yuxi, on top of the early Cambrian fossil beds it exists to explain.
