The building at the crossroads
Jukui Pavilion (聚奎阁) stands where the old town’s four principal streets meet. Destroyed by fire in 1876, it was rebuilt on the same site in 1882. The three-storey structure rises 17.5 metres, with upturned eaves, painted and carved beams, and glazed roof tiles. Forty wooden columns support its base; four central columns extend from the foundations to the roof.
Plaques and changing uses
Four Qing-dynasty plaques hang on the second-storey exterior, one facing each direction. A statue of Kuixing (奎星), associated with success in learning and examinations, occupies the third floor. The ground floor once carried passageways linking the four streets. In 1980, its interior became a reading room, while wider streets were created around the pavilion.

Tonghai Ancient City is the old town of Tonghai county, Yuxi, approved by the State Council in March 2021 as a National Historic and Cultural City, the 136th so designated nationally and, by the Yuxi report's count, the seventh in Yunnan. Its street plan follows the lie of the land in what the reports call a mountain-city-lake layout, with Xiushan behind the old city and Qilu Lake spread across the basin, and the Ming-dynasty Juqui Ge pavilion stands at the crossing of its four main streets.
