Setting and landscape
The district takes its name from Little Tongliang Mountain (小铜梁山), a ridge the district government describes as lying across the land with the colour of copper. The terrain is a transition zone between the mesa hills of central Sichuan and the parallel ridges and valleys of eastern Sichuan, higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest; hills cover 84 per cent of the area. The Fujiang River (涪江), a tributary of the Jialing (嘉陵江), runs 36 kilometres through the district and drains 98 per cent of its area, fed by the Qiongjiang (琼江) and the Xiao'anxi (小安溪). The district government also names Bayue Mountain (巴岳山), Yuqing Mountain (毓青山) and Xuantian Lake (玄天湖) among its hills and waters.
What to see
The Tongliang dragon dance (铜梁龙舞), which the district government calls renowned worldwide, was on the first national list of intangible cultural heritage, and the making of Tongliang dragon lanterns (铜梁龙灯彩扎) was added in the fifth round. The district government says the dance has been performed in Beijing four times for National Day celebrations.
Anju Old Town (安居古城) stands where two rivers meet and has 1,500 years of history as a walled town, according to the district government, which lists it as a Chinese historic and cultural town known for its surviving "nine palaces and eighteen temples" (九宫十八庙). Anju was the seat of a separate county created in 1481 and named after the Anju Stream (安居溪). Its old buildings are on Chongqing's second list of protected monuments; they include the Dongyue Temple (东岳庙), begun in 1477, and the Huilong Bridge (会龙桥), an arched bridge begun in the Hongzhi (弘治) reign of the Ming.
In Bachuan Subdistrict (巴川街道), the Tongliang Martial Temple (铜梁武庙) was founded in 1620 and rebuilt in 1867, with statues of Guan Yu (关羽) and Yue Fei (岳飞). The Qiu Shaoyun Martyr Memorial (邱少云烈士纪念碑), built in 1959, carries an inscription by Zhu De (朱德); Qiu Shaoyun (邱少云), a hero of the Chinese People's Volunteers, came from Tongliang.
