History
Guangdu County was set up in 127 BC under the Shu Commandery; its Han seat stood where the Fu River (府河) meets the Jiang'an River (江安河), in today's Huayang (华阳). In 601 the county was renamed Shuangliu, 'two streams', to avoid the personal name of the Sui emperor Yang Guang (杨广); the name refers to its position between two rivers. A brick-and-stone town wall of 1595 had four gates, and a wall rebuilt in 1766 had a moat. Shuangliu County passed to Chengdu in 1976 and became a district in 2016.
What to see
Huanglongxi Ancient Town (黄龙溪古镇), on the south-western edge of the district, is named after the meeting of the Luxi River (鹿溪河) and the Jin River (锦江). Xinhua's Sichuan village database records 76 intact old houses and three courtyard compounds, with Jinhua Nunnery (金华庵), the Three-County Yamen (三县衙门) and an old opera stage among its protected buildings, and folk customs such as the fire-dragon dance and the Fu River boatmen's chants. People's Daily Online notes that the fire-dragon dance is national intangible heritage and describes the town as a trading centre on the Southern Silk Road in the Tang and Song.
At Pengzhen, the Guanyinge Old Teahouse (观音阁老茶馆) keeps its original structure and layout; Chengdu's city news service dates the building to the middle or late Ming. The teahouse received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation (Award of Merit) in 2023, and water is still boiled on a traditional 'tiger stove' (老虎灶) for lidded-bowl tea.
Food and local products
Yunya rabbit (云崖兔), Shuangliu winter strawberries, Shuangliu erjingtiao chillies (二荆条辣椒) and Shuangliu loquats all carry national geographical indications.
Getting oriented
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport opened in 1938 as Shuangguisi Airport; its international passenger flights moved to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport on 26 March 2023. Shuangliu Airport station on the Chengdu–Guiyang high-speed railway lies beneath Terminal 2, and Metro Line 10 serves both terminals.
