The Buddha and the town

The grottoes take their name from their large image of Amitabha (阿弥陀佛). Shaanxi’s Local Chronicles Office dates the complex to the seventh through tenth centuries and records its earlier name, Yingfu Temple (应福寺). In the urban area, Kaiyuan Temple Pagoda (开元寺塔) is another historic landmark. Shilang Lake (侍郎湖) provides a plateau freshwater landscape, while Chengjiachuan Village (程家川) retains traditional houses and rural scenery.

Orchards and local dishes

Persimmon orchards at Luodian Village (罗店村) lie in Yimen Town (义门镇). Local dishes include chewy yumian (御面), broth-soaked bread (汤泡馍), buckwheat liangfen (荞面凉粉) and crisp Xinmin mahua twists (新民麻花). Apples and Yuluxiang pears (玉露香梨) are also grown here.
