A manor climbing the hillside
Jiang Family Manor (姜氏庄园) rises through lower, middle and upper courtyards, linked internally by concealed passages and enclosed by high defensive walls. Brick, timber and stone carving run through the complex. The buildings combine the local cave-dwelling form with courtyard planning, making the relationship between slope, enclosure and domestic space particularly visible.
Li Zicheng’s hillside complex
Li Zicheng’s Palace (李自成行宫) also follows the changing level of its hillside. A central axis links a theatre, pavilions, gates and halls, with bell and drum towers and side rooms arranged beside it. Beyond these buildings, Mizhi’s folk traditions include yangge dance (秧歌), suona music (唢呐), papercutting and molten-iron spark displays (铁水打花).
