Tiles beneath the salt
Jingzaijiao Tile-Paved Salt Fields (井仔腳瓦盤鹽田) occupy the site to which the Laidong Saltworks (瀨東鹽場) moved in 1818. Fragments of pottery about six millimetres thick form a mosaic-like surface. Seawater is led into the pans and sun-dried to produce salt crystals. The restored fields retain opportunities to experience drying, carrying and collecting salt.
Lagoon and saltworks warehouse
At Beimen Lagoon (北門潟湖), oyster racks and fishponds coexist with mangroves. Whiskered terns spend the winter here. Beimen Visitor Centre (北門遊客中心) occupies a former salt-washing factory warehouse, retaining its old exterior. Inside are displays on local culture, ecology and industry, paintings by Hong Tong (洪通), and a large preserved specimen of a sperm whale found in the Beimen area.
