Yanshuei District 鹽水區

Yanshuei District (鹽水區) retains buildings from its trading-port past and a Catholic church that uses the visual language of Taiwanese temples. These contrasting sites give this part of Tainan (臺南) a distinctive architectural character.

The Octagonal House

The Octagonal House (八角樓) was built in 1847 for the Ye family, whose wealth came from the sugar trade. Craftsmen came from mainland China, along with Fuzhou fir timber (福州杉), bricks and stone. The wooden mansion dates from the prosperous period when merchant vessels frequented Yuejin Harbour (月津港).

A locally interpreted church

At Holy Spirit Church (天主聖神堂), sloping tiled roofs and red columns frame a Catholic interior with an altar and wooden pews. Calligraphic couplets and carved brackets share space with biblical murals. In the Last Supper (最後的晚餐), Chinese-style figures gather around a table where buns replace bread and jue vessels (爵) stand in for wine cups.
