Houbi District 後壁區

Houbi District (後壁區) is a rice-growing part of Tainan (臺南) where green paddies, village workshops and old shops shape the visitor experience. Jingliao (菁寮) became closely associated with the documentary Wumile (無米樂), which follows farmers facing difficult circumstances with optimism.

Rural life at Jingliao

Jingliao Old Street (菁寮老街) retains traditional shops. Community-led tours and hands-on activities introduce farming, local crafts and rural life. Gedaofan (割稻飯), the meal associated with rice harvesting, is part of this agricultural food culture. Visitors can also encounter rice-bread making and indigo-dyeing activities in the district’s village itineraries.

Railways, art and orchids

Wushulin Recreation Park (烏樹林休閒園區) includes a narrow-gauge railway experience and a railway story museum. Tugou Rural Art Museum (土溝農村美術館) is another stop on the district’s rural itineraries. Houbi also hosts the Taiwan International Orchid Show (臺灣國際蘭展), whose first local edition was held in 2005.
