An irregular lake shore

The reservoir’s winding shoreline resembles coral when viewed from above, giving it the name Coral Lake (珊瑚潭). The scenic area includes paths, a campground and a water recreation park. A memorial museum devoted to engineer Hatta Yoichi (八田與一) explains the reservoir’s history. Solar-powered sightseeing boats provide another view of the water.

Restored Japanese houses

North of the reservoir, Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park (八田與一紀念園區) commemorates the builder of the Jianan irrigation system (嘉南大圳). Renovation took place in 2009 and the park was inaugurated in 2011. Its restored Japanese buildings include Hatta’s house, furnished to resemble its historical arrangement. The outdoor garden has a small bridge and water features, including a pond shaped like Taiwan (臺灣).
