From sugar production to culture

Meiji Sugar Company (明治製糖株式會社) established the refinery in 1905 during Japanese rule, and sugar production began in 1908. It closed in 1998 as the sugar industry declined. The cultural park was established in 2003 to put the vacant industrial spaces to a new use.

Exhibitions among factory structures

Former warehouses and factory buildings now provide exhibition spaces for different kinds of art. Their surroundings have the character of a park, with greenery alongside the industrial structures. Retained roof beams and columns expose geometric lines against the sky, making the factory fabric part of the visual experience as well as a home for exhibitions.
