Syuejia District 學甲區

Syuejia District (學甲區) is home to Ciji Temple (慈濟宮), dedicated to Baosheng Dadi (保生大帝), and to the contrasting artistic landscape of Laotanghu Art Village (老塘湖藝術村). Both make craftsmanship a central part of a visit to this district of Tainan (臺南).

Layers of temple craftsmanship

Ciji Temple preserves glazed pottery by Ye Wang (葉王), cut-and-paste ceramic decoration by He Jinlong (何金龍), door-god paintings by Pan Lishui (潘麗水) and fine woodcarving. Some works remain in the temple, while others are kept in the adjacent cultural display hall. Above the entrance, carvings by Su Shuiqin (蘇水欽) show fish, shrimp, crabs and fishing baskets in layered openwork.

Reclaimed materials at Laotanghu

Artist Kuang Jinfu (匡進福), also known as Kuang Yi (匡乙), created Laotanghu from discarded old building materials. Its works combine scenes of early Taiwanese rural life, Fujian-style architecture and imagery of Mongolia’s frontier.
