Xinhua District 新化區

Old Street’s façades

Xinhua Old Street (新化老街) retains Western-style houses and shopfronts with Baroque-inspired façades. Elaborate patterns and carved decoration rise above long-established businesses. The concentration of townhouses grew from a trading centre where Japanese, Han and Plains Indigenous communities interacted. Many shops have histories extending over decades.

The writer’s desk

Beside the former Xinhua district office (新化街役場), the two-storey Yang Kui Memorial Hall displays the writer’s belongings, life story and literary works. A hollow in his wooden desk is said to have formed where he rested his elbow while thinking. The Ou Wei Film Museum (歐威電影館) is next door.
