Yongkang District 永康區

Yongkang District (永康區) preserves memories of Tainan’s (臺南) former inland-sea landscape and commemorates Zheng family history. Kunshan Lake (崑山湖) and the Zheng Chenggong Memorial Stele (鄭成功墓址紀念碑) connect these different histories.

A lake with several names

On the campus of Kun Shan University (崑山科技大學), the lake is also known as Jiyutan (鯽魚潭), after its crucian carp. Other names include Donghu (東湖), referring to its position east of the old city, and Longtan (龍潭), associated with geomantic beliefs about a dragon. Its water has been important for irrigation in Yongkang.

A former burial place

In Yanzhou Village (鹽洲里), the memorial marks the former burial site of Zheng Chenggong (鄭成功) and his son Zheng Jing (鄭經). Their remains were transferred to Nan’an, Fujian (福建南安), in 1699. The former Tainan County Government erected the commemorative stele here in 1980.
