How to Buy China Attraction Tickets: Apps and Tours

How to buy attraction tickets in China – China Revealed travel guide showing how foreigners can book tourist attractions and tours using Trip.com and Meituan, including passport requirements and online ticket reservations.

China attraction tickets for foreigners do not need to turn your holiday into a reservation project. For most sightseeing days, I would start with Meituan or Trip.com, check whether the ticket can be used today, and buy it online. Plan further ahead for the popular reservation-only sights, not every stop on your itinerary.

If you prefer someone else to handle transport and tickets, choose a day tour with admission included. The operator arranges the included tickets; you supply your passport details and turn up at the meeting point.

Quick takeaways

  • Trip.com is my first choice for an English booking flow. Search the attraction, choose the date and package, and save the confirmed ticket.
  • Meituan is useful for local ticket deals. Check today’s availability, when the ticket becomes usable, and whether the product accepts your passport.
  • Buying today does not always mean entering immediately. Look at the booking cutoff and activation time before paying.
  • An admission-included tour saves you buying the same ticket separately. Check the guide language, meeting point and extras.
  • Keep the original passport with you. Your ticket explains whether entry uses the document, a QR code or a ticket exchange.

1. Do you need to book in advance?

Buying a ticket online and reserving a scarce slot days ahead are different things. Plenty of ordinary attraction tickets can be bought on the day. A form asking for your name, passport or visit date does not by itself mean you needed to reserve a week ago.

For a normal sightseeing day, search your next attraction on Meituan or Trip.com and check the available visit date. If today is offered, read the latest booking time and how soon the ticket works. You can also buy at the official ticket office where the attraction offers that option.

The places I would check early are the headline museums and quota-controlled sights you really want to visit. Weekends and major holidays are also good reasons to buy sooner. You do not need to install a different official mini-program for every ordinary stop.

For a quick check, ask DeepSeek or Doubao in English:

I am visiting [attraction] in [city] on [date] with a foreign passport. Can I buy a ticket that day on Meituan or Trip.com, or does this attraction require an advance reservation? Find its latest official instructions, Chinese name, booking cutoff and entry method. Is there a day tour with admission included?

Use AI to find the Chinese name and explain a confusing ticket page; open the current official notice when it says advance booking is required.

Ask about your attraction and date before treating ordinary online ticket sales as an advance-reservation requirement.

2. How to buy attraction tickets on Trip.com

For a first-time visitor who wants English menus and international-card payment, I recommend Trip.com. Use the app or website; the same checks apply to both.

  1. Open Attractions & Tours or search for the attraction and city. Check the exact location—different Great Wall sections, for example, are separate destinations.
  2. Open the ticket product and read What’s included. Choose admission only, or the combination you want. A shuttle, cable car, guide and admission may be sold separately.
  3. Tap Select package, choose the Date of use, and select the ticket or package. Pick the time slot if one is offered, then add the number of visitors.
  4. Open Booking information, How to use and the cancellation terms. For today’s tickets, check the same-day cutoff before pressing Book now.
  5. Complete the requested traveller and contact details. Where the booking asks for identity details, select Passport and enter the details from the passport you will bring.
  6. Review the total, use a payment method offered at checkout, and return to My Bookings / All Bookings. Open the confirmed ticket or voucher and save it.

The product matters more than the attraction name. On the Shanghai Tower reference page below, the entry-level option includes admission plus English entry assistance at 19:30. It is a fixed-time package, not a ticket you can use at any hour. The page also offers more expensive private-guide upgrades.

Choose your date and the exact package; this example includes fixed-time admission and English entry assistance, not an all-day ticket.

3. How to buy attraction tickets on Meituan

If you already use Meituan for food and local deals, it is a practical place to compare attraction tickets too. Our Meituan guide for foreigners covers registration, English settings and payments.

Open the main Meituan / 美团 app, set the correct city, and look for Attraction Tickets / 景点门票 or search the attraction’s Chinese name. If your home screen has a different layout, use search rather than hunt for an old icon position. The English setting helps with navigation, although some ticket pages remain Chinese.

Open the attraction and choose the actual ticket offer. Then read Purchase Instructions / 购买须知 before buying. The useful labels are:

Label on the ticketWhat I check
可订今日 / 可订明日Can I book for today, or only tomorrow?
立即可用 / 预计…小时后可用Does the ticket work immediately, or after a waiting period?
门票 / 套票Is this admission only, or a combination ticket?
出票速度How long should ticket issuance take?
换票入园 / 无需换票Do I exchange it at a counter, or enter directly?
退款规则What happens if my plans change?

Tap Buy now / 立即购买 or Book now / 立即预订, choose the visit date and quantity, and complete the traveller fields requested. For a real-name ticket, check that Passport / 护照 is offered. If that product accepts only a Chinese ID card, I would switch to a passport-supported Trip.com product or the attraction’s official foreign-visitor route.

Check the final total and pay with a method shown at checkout, such as your configured Alipay or WeChat Pay. Then open the ticket channel’s Orders / 订单, or find it under Me / 我的 → Orders. Look for Unused / 待使用 and open Admission Voucher / 入园凭证.

Read availability and activation time, then find the unused order’s Admission Voucher. Historical reference screens: 券零五.

One local detail is worth remembering: do not buy at the turnstile before checking activation time. The pictured offer says it becomes usable about four hours later and lists tomorrow as the bookable day. Other offers work immediately. Those labels decide whether a deal fits today’s plan.

4. Book a tour and let the operator arrange tickets

For an out-of-town attraction, a tour can be easier than sorting out transport, admission and the return journey yourself. Choose a package with Admission included / Entry tickets included: the operator handles those tickets, so you do not need to buy them again.

On Trip.com, search the attraction with day tour, or use the tours category. On Meituan, look for Day Tours / 一日游 or Local Tours / 当地参团; for an English-speaking tour, Trip.com is generally the easier place to read the options.

Open the package, select the date and number of travellers, and check the guide language, meeting point or hotel pickup, return arrangement and included admission. Read the extras too: a cable car, boat ride or lunch may still cost more. Submit the requested passport details through the booking service or the operator’s verified contact, and keep the booking confirmation and meeting instructions.

For example, the Mutianyu Great Wall + Summer Palace day tour checked for this guide includes Great Wall admission, the scenic-area shuttle and Summer Palace admission. Its displayed option also lists an English guide and a city meeting point. You buy the package, provide the traveller details, and let the operator arrange the included tickets.

Choose a package with admission included, then check its language and meeting point before booking.

My message to the operator would be:

We are foreign passport holders. Please confirm that you will arrange the included admission tickets, tell us which passport details you need, and send the meeting point and guide language. Which rides or other costs are extra?

Once those tickets are confirmed, do not place a duplicate admission order. For a sold-out reservation-only museum, ask whether the operator has confirmed entry before committing your day—a tour is a convenient booking route, not an unlimited extra ticket supply.

5. Passport details, confirmation and entry

For a real-name booking, select Passport / 护照 before entering the number. If the form separates surname and given name, use the corresponding passport fields. If it has one full-name box, follow that service’s format. Add each traveller separately where requested; do not assume all platforms use the same name order.

After payment, open the actual order. Confirmed / 预约成功 / 预订成功, a usable voucher or a completed ticket result is what you want. If it still says Processing / 处理中, wait for its stated confirmation time and contact order support if it passes. If it fails, check the order and refund status before paying again.

Keep the order number, confirmed page or email, admission voucher and original payment receipt together. A free museum reservation needs its confirmation but no payment receipt.

Open the admission voucher after payment and keep the order number. Reference screens: 券零五; 和小L一起长大.

At the attraction, bring the original passport used for booking and any required discount proof. Follow How to use / 使用说明 for the named entrance, entry window and any ticket exchange. Staff may scan your voucher, check your passport manually, or exchange the booking for a physical ticket. If the reader only accepts Chinese ID cards, show the passport and order to staff.

For a tour, go to the meeting point, not straight to the attraction gate. Keep the guide’s contact and confirmed pickup time available.

Keep a short list of exceptions instead of treating your whole trip as a ticket-release schedule. The Forbidden City is a clear example: it does not sell same-day tickets, and reservations currently open seven days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time. Other quota-controlled museums and sights have their own release dates and time slots.

For those places, check the official app, website or WeChat mini-program early. The Forbidden City official entrance points to the 故宫博物院 mini-program; inside, look for 购票约展 / Tickets and Exhibitions. Do not assume an English-platform listing is an officially authorised ticket agent.

Use the official booking route for reservation-only sights; ordinary app ticket purchases do not all need this advance planning. Reference: CC和大卫.

If a foreign-number SMS code fails or the passport field is rejected, use the attraction’s official help or a supported English booking product. For ordinary same-day sights, the official ticket window is another option. If money was taken but no ticket is confirmed, send order support the payment receipt and order number rather than make repeated purchases.

My approach: buy ordinary attraction tickets through the apps, reserve the few must-see exceptions ahead, and choose admission-included tours when you want someone else to handle the logistics.
