Setting and landscape
The Chan (浐), Ba and Wei (渭) rivers flow through the district and meet here, leaving some 60 km of open water and wetland; the Baqiao Ecological Wetland Park (灞桥生态湿地公园) draws city residents. On the Bailuyuan tableland (白鹿原) orchards give fruit in every season, while Hongqingshan National Forest Park (洪庆山国家级森林公园) has bamboo groves and fast streams.
History
People of the Banpo culture settled here about 6,000 years ago. Emperor Wen of the Western Han built his tomb, Baling (霸陵), in the district; its identification was named one of China's ten major archaeological discoveries of the year, and its animal burial pits one of the world's ten. In the Qin and Han a wooden bridge crossed the Ba west of today's Shangqiaozikou village (上桥梓口村), about 5 km north-west of Baqiao town. Willows lined both banks, and people of the capital saw guests off here by breaking a willow branch for them; under the Tang a post station, Zishui Station (滋水驿), stood at the bridge. Catkins drifting like snow in spring make up the view "Ba willows in wind and snow" (灞柳风雪), one of the Eight Views of Guanzhong (关中八景). In the early People's Republic the Textile City (纺织城) was built here, and at the end of the twentieth century Chen Zhongshi (陈忠实) wrote his novel White Deer Plain (白鹿原) in the district.
What to see
Xi'an Banpo Museum (西安半坡博物馆), on the east bank of the Chan in the eastern suburbs, opened in April 1958 as the first museum of a prehistoric settlement in the People's Republic. The site was found in spring 1953 and dug between 1954 and 1957, revealing a Neolithic Yangshao-culture village of about 6,000 years ago. It is on the first list of national protected sites. Its prize find is a basin painted with a human face and fish (人面鱼纹盆), which inspired the Fuwa mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and a horizontal pottery kiln on display is among the earliest well-preserved kilns found in China.
The district counts more than 350 tourist sites and relics, including the folk-custom quarter at Bailucang (白鹿仓).
Food and local products
Cherries and grapes cover more than 100,000 mu (6,700 hectares), and visitors can pick the fruit. Baqiao cherries (灞桥樱桃) carry national geographical indication certification, and Baqiao grapes (灞桥葡萄) are a protected geographical indication product.
Getting oriented
Xi'an East Station (西安东站), a large hub combining high-speed, conventional and intercity rail with the metro and buses, has opened in the district.
