Buildings fitted to the hillside
The temple’s origins lie in the Eastern Jin period (东晋), with repeated enlargement under the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties (元明清). Its buildings are fitted to the hillside. Northern-style palace architecture and smaller southern-style garden buildings appear within the same complex. Ancient cypresses accompany the temples.
A fair rooted in worship
The Wenchang Temple Fair (文昌庙会) grew from rituals honouring Wenchang. It combines worship, cultural activities and trade, with spring and autumn editions. Dongjing ceremonial music (洞经古乐) forms part of the experience described by Mianyang’s culture and tourism bureau. During the Qing Xianfeng era (清代咸丰年间), Wenchang worship was incorporated into state ceremonies, adding an imperial dimension to this local tradition.
