Setting and landscape
The land falls from forested hills in the north, where Tiantangding (天堂顶) on the border with Huizhou reaches 1,210 metres, to the delta plain in the south; Baiyun Mountain (白云山), inside the city, is called its lungs. The city lies on the lower Xi, Bei and Dong rivers; the Pearl River’s front and back channels run through the urban area, and three of the river’s eight mouths lie within the city.
History
Legend tells of five immortals riding rams who brought ears of rice, hence the nicknames City of Rams and City of Rice Ears. In 214 BC the Qin founded Nanhai commandery with its seat at Panyu (番禺), today’s Guangzhou; from 204 BC Zhao Tuo (赵佗) ruled the Nanyue kingdom from the same city until the Han conquest of 111 BC. The name Guangzhou appeared after Sun Quan (孙权) split Jiaozhou in 226. Under the Tang the city was the start of the sea route to foreign lands, the Song set up what the city government calls China’s first maritime trade office here, and in the Ming and Qing it was for a long period the only port open to foreign trade.
What to see
The Nanyue King’s Tomb (南越王墓), Guangxiao Temple (光孝寺) and Liurong Temple (六榕寺) are all more than a thousand years old; the Nanhai God Temple (南海神庙) was founded in the Sui, and the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠) and Yuyin Shanfang (余荫山房) date from the Qing. Shamian (沙面) island was occupied by Britain and France for more than 80 years from 1861. Revolutionary sites include the Huanghuagang tomb of the 72 martyrs (黄花岗七十二烈士墓), the Whampoa Military Academy (黄埔军校) site and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (中山纪念堂). The Canton Tower (广州塔) is 600 metres tall, and the Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆), a national first-grade museum, stands in Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城).
Food and local products
Guangzhou is the representative city of Cantonese cuisine. Morning tea (早茶) with dim sum is one of its best-known food customs, and many restaurants serve three teas, two meals and a late-night meal. Classic dishes include roast suckling pig, winter-melon cup and slow-boiled soup, and the humid heat has made herbal tea (凉茶) an everyday habit.
Getting oriented
The city government sits in Yuexiu District (越秀区), and the main urban area spans Yuexiu, Liwan (荔湾区), Haizhu (海珠区) and Tianhe (天河区). Baiyun Mountain and the Chimelong Tourist Resort (长隆旅游度假区) are national 5A scenic areas.
