Zhengzhou 郑州市

Zhengzhou (郑州市), capital of Henan (河南) since 1954, lies at the eastern foot of Mount Song (嵩山) beside the Yellow River (黄河). The city government counts it among China's eight ancient capitals and notes that it was known in history as 'the centre of heaven and earth' (天地之中) and in antiquity as a Shang capital.

Setting and landscape

Mount Song, made up of the Taishi (太室) and Shaoshi (少室) ranges, is the central peak of the Five Great Mountains and one of China's first world geoparks. On the Yellow River, the Taohuayu (桃花峪) area marks where the Loess Plateau meets the North China Plain and divides the river's middle and lower reaches.

History

The Peiligang (裴李岗), Dahe Village (大河村), Yangshao (仰韶) and Shang royal-city cultures, from 8,000 to 3,600 years old, all converge here, and the Xia, Shang, Guan (管), Zheng (郑) and Han (韩) all had capitals in the area. In the old town, the Shang city site is an early Shang capital about 3,600 years old, identified as Bo (亳), the capital built by King Tang (汤); it became a national key cultural relics protection unit in 1961, and 2,586 metres of its inner walls still stand above ground. In 1923 Zhengzhou was where the Beijing–Hankou Railway workers' strike began, commemorated by the February 7 Memorial Tower (二七纪念塔).

What to see

Dengfeng (登封) holds the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in 'the Centre of Heaven and Earth', World Heritage since 2010. Its eight sites and eleven structures, built from the Han to the Qing, include the observatory (观星台), Songyue Pagoda (嵩岳寺塔), Zhongyue Temple (中岳庙), Songyang Academy (嵩阳书院) and the Shaolin Temple (少林寺) complex with its Pagoda Forest (塔林). Shaolin was built in 495 for the Indian monk Batuo (跋陀); the city government calls it the ancestral seat of Chan Buddhism, where Bodhidharma (菩提达摩) first taught, and Shaolin kung fu is national intangible heritage. The Zhengzhou section of the Grand Canal is also World Heritage. Henan Museum (河南博物院) is one of the first national museums built jointly by central and local government.

Food and local products

The city's culture and tourism bureau describes huimian (烩面) as dough pulled by hand into strips of varying width and cooked in a white broth of mutton and bones, with day-lily buds, wood-ear fungus and glass noodles. Yellow River carp with baked noodles (黄河鲤鱼焙面) pairs sweet-and-sour carp with hair-thin noodles fried until crisp. Its food list also includes hulatang (胡辣汤), Cai family steamed dumplings (蔡记蒸饺) and Ge family braised flatbread (葛记焖饼).

Getting oriented

The city government calls Zhengzhou the only centre of a 'double cross' in both China's conventional and high-speed rail networks; its high-speed lines spread in the shape of the character mi (米).
